Trahere

These limited release wines are inspired by our high density vineyards in Main Ridge, the culmination of years of planning, hard work and passion.
It is the beginning of an exciting new journey...

trahēre (tra•her•e)

Latin verb: to draw or pull.

Derivatives: tract (a tract of land), tractor (a vehicle that pulls), protract (to draw forward), traction (to make progress), and contract (to bring together).

This limited release wine is a culmination of these elements; the land we work and care for, our drive to make progress and pull forward, our passion to learn and to bring people together to produce the best wines possible, from this Bunurong land.

The Trahere Chardonnay and Trahere Pinot Noir are the ultimate expression of our beautiful vineyards, the vintage and ourselves.

HIGH DENSITY VITICULTURE
  • In an ongoing effort to explore the influence of best viticulture practices on wine quality we have established two high density vineyards in Main Ridge - The Spedding Vineyard and Gabrielle Vineyard.
  • On these high density vineyards, vines are planted at 4 times the density of a normal vineyard (12,120 vines/ha) on typical Main Ridge red, volcanic soils and with a lovely gentle north easterly slope down to Manton Creek valley.
  • High density planting creates greater competition between vines resulting in deeper root systems, smaller bunch and berry sizes and most significantly, in greater flavour concentration.

"The bouquet wonderfully detailed with several variations on citrus, especially lemon and grapefruit, plus hints of beeswax and lightly toasted hazelnuts. Oak is seamlessly integrated. In the mouth, very intense and yet refined and light on its feet, with refreshing properties and tremendous persistence. A great chardonnay."

— 98 PTS, HUON HOOKE

The Land

"Sourced from the best vineyard sites – including some newer, very high-density plantings – it has remarkable intensity, concentration, and almost voluptuous dark fruit, but also superb finesse and length of flavour."

— MAX ALLEN, AUSTRALIAN FINANCIAL REVIEW

Viticulture

The Trahere wines are inspired by our new high density vineyards in Main Ridge, planted at 12,120 vines/ha with a selection of our best performing clones and grown utilising sustainable viticultural practices.

These vineyards sit high within the beautiful valleys that stretch from the lower eastern reaches of Arthurs Seat (Wonga) to Western Port (Warn Marin) along the ‘main’ ridge. The vineyard sites have wide open easterly and westerly aspects and beautiful rich red volcanic soils, with deposits of ironstone, formed from basalt rock over the past 40 million years.

The Craft

“The craft of wine making is an ongoing journey of learning and discovery. We continually strive for improvement in everything we do – both in our vineyards and in the winery.”

— MARTIN SPEDDING

WINEMAKING

Our winemaking philosophy is to follow natural and low intervention methods to provide the clearest expression of our terroir. Our aim is to create wines of distinction, which demands an artisanal approach, and it is this philosophy that guides the creation of Trahere.

It has taken 20 years to get to this point; the beginning of a new journey to produce wines that have every advantage of their origin, our experience, hard work, and passion for what we do.
