Although he had always harboured a lifelong ambition to be involved in the wine industry, Martin completed a Bachelor of Economics at the University of New England before working in the financial services and IT sectors.
In 2002, after more than a decade of running his own businesses and CEO roles, Martin decided it was time to make a radical change of direction and realise his vision of becoming a winemaker.
Although born and bred in New South Wales, Martin developed a particular passion for Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and the cool climate wines of Victoria. He spent two years researching and visiting hundreds of vineyard sites and winery businesses across Australia and New Zealand.
Finally, despite suggestions from many qualified advisors that he give up his dream, Martin found what he had been looking for. In December 2003 Martin visited the cellar door of his favourite small winery on the Mornington Peninsula; the Ten Minutes By Tractor Wine Co. and after discovering that it was for sale, he acted immediately.
Martin quickly discovered that he and winemaker Richard McIntyre shared a strong philosophy about non-interventionist winemaking and held a similar vision for the potential of Ten Minutes by Tractor. Since then, Ten Minutes by Tractor has made significant advances in the meticulous care and improvement of its vineyards and the creation of its handmade wines, which are annually received with ever greater acclaim.
As well as his passionate involvement in Ten Minutes by Tractor, Martin was also President of the Mornington Peninsula Vignerons Association for three years between 2005 and 2008, which represents more than 160 wineries and grape growers on the Mornington Peninsula.
He was also appointed to the Victorian Wine Industry Association Board of Directors, and was invited by the State Government to join the steering committee which developed the ‘Vintage 2010’ five year strategic plan for the wine industry in Victoria.
Martin is a passionate advocate for Mornington Peninsula wines, our region and the cool climate wines of Victoria. He relishes the challenge and journey to discover the full potential of our vineyards and winemaking abilities, a long and slow journey that started many years ago and will continue for generations to come.
